#4

We have added yet another addition to our family... a 2 year old boy!  That story is still unfolding , so I'll have to write it at a later date. I wanted to pause though and write down some of the ways I have seen God provide for us in the past week. They are small details, but I think they point out just how big our God is:

Monday- day 1- Amy brings us dinner.  This is a big deal.

Tuesday- 1st morning on my own (Corey at work +jack is at preschool). Robyn came over and picked up a gallon of milk for us on her way.  (We were out!)  Having her help for an hour was awesome!

My parents offer to put Ryan in Weecare too.  Miraculously there were just the right amount of spots available that we were able to enroll him both Tuesday and Thursday.  All 3 big kids will be in weecare on Tuesday.  Praise the lord- a few hours off!  I can regain some sanity.

I have been mourning the loss of many things... Thinking, "will I ever be able to ____ again."  Exercise was one of those things (not that I was actually exercising before, but I'm thinking now I really will never be able to exercise again)... Until I pushed the double stroller while wearing Burk up and down the hills in our neighborhood.  Cardio and strength training!  With all 4 kids entertained, happy, and restrained.

Wednesday- Mana from heaven. The Angels sing. The lord shines his face upon us.  He is GOOD.  Our walmart neighborhood market opens their 1st day of pickup groceries.  This is no consequence.  The timing was flawless.  We giddily loaded everyone up and sat in the car while a week's worth of groceries were loaded into our vehicle.
Amazing.  God is gracious.  he KNOWS.

Thursday- Weecare.  Hallelujah. The 2 middle school girls who live next door also text me to say that they are off Friday (my 1st real full day with all 4 kids ALONE.) for teacher in service day.  And they want to come help with the kids!  Yes please!  And let's go to the park!

Friday- We enjoy our first outing at the park and we are man-to-man, 3 on 3.  So wonderful to have my neighbors' help!  The kids loved it.

There were other small and wonderful things too, but these are the ones I can remember.  I have felt like God has been saying, "my mercies are new each day." and "take one day at a time.  don't worry about tomorrow."  I can't believe how he orchestrates even small details.  He has sent his help in so many ways this first week.  His kindness and grace has been so real and tangible.

August 2015

1.  Charlotte drops her afternoon nap... The week Burk is born.

2.  We got a sandbox and love it.

3.  Watching "honey birds" drink from our feeder.

4.  "Zert " Jack's favorite meal course

5.  Charlotte loves looking at books and can entertain herself for an hour flipping pages and "reading" to her teddy.

6.  Jack's favorite toy is his kitty.  Charlotte's is her teddy w/her kitty a close second.

7.  We struggle with sharing.

8.  Eating "little cones" outside and saving $ from going to Braum's multiple times a week.

9.  Jack loving to give kisses to baby Burk... And holding baby too!

10.  When we ask Charlotte what she thinks of Burk, "I don't know."

11.  It took us until now to see how valuable a routine can be.  We are winning with our new nighttime routine that starts at 7:00.  Bath, brush teeth, PJs, drink, potty, read a book, and go to bed.  You have to do ALL the things.  That, plus no naps, equals instant sleep.

12.  Jack likes putting money in his "penny bank."

13. A random dark tabby cat shows up in our backyard.  She has so much tolerance for small children.  From letting them put water on her to picking her up and carrying her.  We have named her "Katarina Kitty Cat" (Daniel Tiger) and we are not feeding her.

Charlotte's 1st Birthday Party

I can't believe my baby is ONE!  We had a celebration with the family:
all those monthly photos...
the chalkboard wall in the kitchen saw some action...

We can fill a room fast with family!  So blessed to have all of these people in our lives.  Majority of the party-people traveled 3.5 hours to celebrate with us!  (Thank you!)
Oh dear.  The birthday cake.  Not what either of us expected.  Charlotte swatted the cake and got some icing on her hand... then she didn't like it on her hand so she slung it off... and when she did, a huge glob of it plopped onto her EYE.  Then the crowd erupted and so did Charlotte.  She went into inconsolable hysterics and had to be escorted from the room!  When I finally got her to calm down, she pulled away from me and started looking at her hands, which still had icing on them, and she broke into hysterics again!  We had to get that stuff off quick!
We tried not to make any sudden moves during gift opening.  Charlotte clung to her sipped cup for support.
Eventually she warmed up when she realized nothing was going to bite her.
Grammy and Grandaddy got her a ride on toy!  She looooved it!  So giddy!  She knew what to do.  She had been watching brother ride his bike all this time...
It was a wonderful party.  Charlotte I cannot believe you are growing up on us!

January 2015 | lately

Wanted to jot down a few things about the kids...

Charlotte is still obsessed with cats.  She loves fluffy things.  Including my faux fur vest, which she pets, kisses, lays her head on, and says, "kitt-tee!"

She also likes pigs and attempts to snort.

She also nods her head and stomps her foot when listening to music.

She antagonizes Jack.  If she has something he wants, she now runs from him.  I also witnessed her playing with some of his toy cars recently, and when he walked in the room she quickly moved them into a pile and laid on top of them! He walked right by and didn't even see them!

She gives big hugs and grunts as she strains to give you a hug with all her might.

Talking all the time.  She likes to sit with me and look around the room and come up with as many things to say as she can.  "Eye....mama eye.  Feet!  Teddy eye.  Blanket.  Kitty!  Kitty eye"

Both kids love cats and carry around stuffed animal cats.  They also picked out a cat card for my birthday.  Charlotte will also say, "kitty.  meow"

Jack stopped napping.  OMG.

Jack LOVES "Open Season" the movie.  He has never watched a full episode of anything and one day I put in Open Season and he's hooked!   This has been so wonderful for mornings I need a few minutes to shower/get ready and it keeps both kiddos entertained while I prep dinner too.

Jack loves to dig in sand or dirt.  He got new dump trucks for his birthday and he can spend HOURS digging in the dirt in our backyard or playing in the sand at the park.

When we go out to restaurants the kids favorite things are chocolate milk for Jack and lemonade for charlotte.  They love mac n cheese and chicken nuggets.  and we really don't eat out that often.

Both kids yell "Go!" when we are stopped at red lights.

There are things we do every week: mom's connection, grocery shop, and alternating every other week- Art for me/Aunt lissa for the kids... toddler time at the library, play date with Lucy, Amy, and Anna... or the "gaddy girls" as I have started calling them.

Jack calls undershirts "same shirt" b/c he and daddy both have the same shirt.

Jack is entering the age where he says really hilarious things that make you think, did you really just say that and where did that come from??  At community Group one night there were two guys in the kitchen by themselves. Jack walked in and said, "are you hiding from your mommy because you're in trouble?"

Jack talking on the phone is hilarious.  I let him call or FaceTime the grandparents for their amusement and mine.  He is a great conversationalist.

# 3

For personal documentation:

5 weeks-  dec 2nd I take a courtesy test, b/c there's like no way I'm pregnant... OMG.
Excited.  Nervous.  maybe a little scared.  Feeling pretty committed at this point.  Called Corey immediately b/c I needed to shock someone else.  His reaction?  "Are you sure??? How many tests did you take?"  realization that I will be a hot mess through the summer b/c I'm due in AUGUST.

6 weeks- SO TIRED.  Usually in the evening.  I want to go to sleep at 8:30.  Some days naptime is for naps.  Banana Peppers- load up that turkey sandwich.

7 weeks- so tired.  And waking up twice to pee every night.

8 weeks- so very tired.  Life seems overwhelming.  I feel like the only 2 things I can do is make sure that me and the kids sleep and eat.  There is no energy for anything else... cleaning...organization...wearing something other than pajamas.  Lots of naps

Week 9. PIZZA!  Snow skiing.  Still tired, but kind of coming out of it.

Week 10:  more energy, but still taking a nap here and there.  We got to hear the heartbeat!  187-192 BPM. I made a special trip one night to Guraldis at 8pm to get pizza bread.

Week 11: random moments of exhaustion then a little bit of normalness. Ready for some more energy.  99% sure I felt the baby move one night right as I got still.  Crazy!  I'm pretty sure there was no mistaking it- I've felt it before (just not this early!)  So neat!  I still want pizza.  And my pants are getting tight.  I would say I'm officially showing already.  Mercy.

12 weeks!  How did we get here already?  Still kinda tired, but not as bad.  Have felt 1-2 other flutters of movement!  I'm wondering if it's twins?  They run in the family.

13 weeks:  still tired here and there... but forgetting that I'm pregnant.  Except for the fact that I look like I'm 18 weeks pregnant.

14 weeks: Coming out of the extreme tired and entering into just low-energy.  Out of necessity for survival I have been drinking one caffeinated beverage a day.  I didn't realize that I was doing this until I went a day without caffeine and experienced my first ever caffeine headache!   whaaaa???

15 Weeks: egg rolls.  I want one.  I am feeling all kinds of flutters here and there- so exciting!  I really feel like I'm further along than expected OR we are having twins or something.

16 weeks- we skipped it b/c at my prenatal appointment I measured 17 weeks

17 weeks- it's a BOY!  Much to my surprise!  I am wrong every. single. time.

18 weeks we had a gender reveal party with family b/c Corey's parents were up- so fun!  Loved having everyone there to celebrate.  Also this week, a complete stranger aknowledges my baby bump.

19 weeks
Finally starting to recover from a 2 week cold/cough

20 weeks
Corey felt the baby kick!  Most impressive

21 weeks I have had so many ailments.  The cold that lasted forever, pink eye, a cough that kept me up all night, a stomach bug that laid me out for 3 days, and straining/bruising/cracking a rib from coughing so hard.  :(. So ready to be better!

22 weeks you can now SEE the baby move!

23 weeks This baby is moving SO MUCH.  We might have finally decided on a name?  Burk?

24 feeling pretty good for a pregnant person

25 weeks. Hiccups!!!!  Sweet tiny baby ones

Weeks 26-30.  Nesting and somewhat of an energy boost.  Feeling breathless almost daily.
28 weeks:
 33 weeks:

Week 30.  Starting to feel large.  Once a day I crash on the couch for an hour or more.  Curious George is a popular guy around here.  Experiencing heartburn.

Weeks 30-40 I am so over this being pregnant thing.  HA!  The last 10 weeks:
- baby brother moves SO MUCH.  SO. MUCH.  Corey and I call it "Burkalating"
- other people notice my belly moving.
- Burk likes to push his feet with all his might and you can see the contour of his little booty poking up.
- I got devastatingly tired.  Nancy recommended multiple supplements and I finally found a balance that actually made me able to enjoy life again!
- Corey and I busied ourselves with projects.  finishing trim, painting on the den, working on the nursery, etc.
- at 38 weeks I scrambled to get all of the really important things done and Claira took our maternity photos
- between 40-41 weeks Burk was born!

Burk's Birth Story

disclaimer:  I write this as if I plan for my close friends to read it.  This is our 3rd labor and delivery, so I'm kinda desensitized to some of these things and may not have a filter.  I try not to be gross.

I thought this day would never come ;).

We were given 2 different due dates:  July 30th and August 7th.  It's hard to say if Burk was early or late.  He landed right in between the dates, so right on time I guess!

Monday, August 3rd
I'm a little depressed because here I was grocery shopping again.  I thought surely last week would be my last trip.  After unloading and putting away the groceries I discovered around 11am that I was spotting a little.  WOOT!!!!!!  Our first sign!  I called Corey, our midwife, Melissa, and my mom to tell them.  (This is the "birth team")

I felt crampy through the afternoon.  I had contractions through the evening.  10 minutes apart, but only 30 seconds in duration.  After putting the kids to bed Corey and I busied ourselves preparing our house... straightening up and cleaning and setting out supplies that would be needed during the birth.

****I will include below what the "supplies" are because I know some are curious about this homebirth stuff and how in the world it works.  SKIP if you don't give a rip:

Kitchen:  large pot of water for boiling herbs for postpartum herbal tea and herbal sitz bath, herbs, salt, honey (for herbal tea), strainer (to strain out tea leaves after boiling), snacks, stuff for a smoothie if I needed some energy.

Bathroom: crockpot with washcloths for heat compress

Our bedroom: birth pool, towels for drying off, recieving blankets to wrap baby in, newborn outfit, changing pad, diapers, wipes,  plastic sheet and "under pads"for protecting the bed.

****************continue

When we finished we watched a TV show while trying to decide if we needed to call Nancy.  I had been updating everyone along the way.  I was pretty uncomfortable and felt like the contractions were doing a lot of work.  I think we were all worried with it being my 3rd that things might progress quickly.  We decided to try to get some sleep, and went to bed around 10:00.  Between 1:00-2:00 I had contractions every 5 minutes and I was pretty uncomfortable.  I was thinking that this was probably it.  We called Nancy and she came around 2:30.  She checked me and I was only dilated to 2cm.  :(  I was so discouraged.  We all decided to try to go back to sleep.  I contracted throughout the night, but slept some.  Eventually the contractions just kinda peetered out.

TUESDAY, August 4

Nancy spent the night at our house and checked me at 7:30am and I was dilated 3-4cm.  Since the contractions had stopped, and this was similar to what happened during Charlotte's birth, Nancy headed back home.

I asked Corey to stay home from work b/c I really didn't feel all that great at all.  My mom came and got the kids so that we could rest during the day since we would probably be back at it tonight.  After laying around all morning, I decided that this was too depressing just waiting.  I took a shower, got ready, and Corey and I went out for a lunch date.  sushi!  I was definitely having strong contractions, but only like 2 an hour.  We enjoyed our lunch and then went home for a nap.  We got some much needed rest, then decided to go to Savoy Tea for something to drink in the afternoon.  We sat and chatted laughing that this was labor.  (I mean, I knew it was going to get hard, but this break was so strange.)  We bought a couple of newborn outfits at Carter's and then drove to Springdale to see the kids and eat pizza with my parents.  side note that is TMI- I am "spotting" or as the text book calls it, having "bloody show" all day long.  My digestive system also did an epic purge that sent me on about 10 trips to the bathroom throughout the day.  Amazing all the things your body does in prep for birth.

Sushi Date:

During dinner, contractions started picking up again.  Really not comfortable, so we headed home again, leaving the kids to spend the night.  We watched a little TV to pass the time.  I'm still not certain at what point I need to call everyone in.  I didn't want everyone to have to wait around, I really wasn't miserable just yet.  Around 9:30pm we skimmed our Bradley book to try to decide what stage of labor I was in... it looked like 1st stage still.  We decided to go to bed again.  contractions were 10 minutes apart and 1 minute in duration.  The last few as we laid down were spread out further, so I feared that I was stalling for the night again.  I tried to read sitting up in bed b/c contractions really hurt my back laying down.  I gave up though b/c I couldn't just sit up in bed until labor got serious, so I tried to lay down and dose off.  Between 11:00-11:30 I woke up to some mega contractions.  I had several really close together that about sent me out of my mind.  I woke up Corey to fill up the pool, I needed some relief!  I went to the living room and called Nancy and Melissa at 11:40.  I needed everyone NOW.  Corey contacted my mom and told her to come as well.

I got in the pool before it was finished filling up, I was desperate.  OH, I hoped this didn't last all night.  I was miserable.  Melissa and my mom made it around midnight.  My mom, Melissa, and Corey took turns timing my contractions (There's an app for that now!- ha!)  Melissa commented that they were continuing to get closer together.  I wasn't in any mood to chat.  I shushed everyone during contractions b/c they were so intense that noise hurt.  I was for sure feeling a lot of pressure.  Nancy arrived around 12:30.  She was buzzing around setting things out.  She got a shush too.  I know everyone was excited, but I was feeling the PAIN.  I asked Nancy if she wanted to check me.  She said that she didn't have to... but I really needed to know where we were standing.  I told everyone that this had to be transition, and if it wasn't that I might die when I reached transition.  I also told everyone that the birth team was retiring after this.  I'm done birthing babes.  Melissa said that I didn't have to make that decision in this moment ;).

At 1:10am Nancy decided to check me and managed to do so without making me get out of the water.  :)  The Lord shined his face upon me in this moment because GLORY I was "complete" Nancy said!  Everyone is REAL excited at this point.  "So we're just waiting on the urge to push, right??" I said.  I changed positions every few contractions, and it wasn't but just a few before I felt the urge to push.  I bailed out of the pool and had help drying off before trying to get to the bed before the next contraction.

I attempted the traditional reclined pushing position, but after 2-3 contractions I never felt the urge to push.  I had a "lip of cervix" on one side that wasn't quite dilating.  I didn't know whether to push through it or wait.  My water broke during this time.  I decided to lay on my side-propped up on some pillows- on the side that had the lip of cervix.  With the next contraction I felt the urge to push again.  I wasn't so sure about pushing on my side (feeling kind of like a barn animal), so I had 2 contractions like this and then attempted the reclined position again.  I still didn't have the urge to push that way, so I decided that we were going to have this baby laying on my side- not planned, but Nancy said it would work.  I may have had another contraction or 2 on my side, I was giving my body a chance to see what it would do if I didn't push with it.  (I keep hearing all these stories about babies just falling out on their own.  whatever.  those things don't happen to me.)  So, with the next contraction I push and my body was working with me. (Your body kinda heaves as if you were throwing up)  With the next contraction everyone cheered me on and continued encouraging me to push.  My mom gives the play-by-play as it's happening- which is helpful b/c I am OUT OF MY MIND in pain and it's nice to know that progress is being made through the pain.  Burk was born at 2:13am.  He came out crying and healthy and perfect... and without wounding the exit.  Praise the Lord.

The next few moments are my favorite.  It's amazing how it can be so intense and then BOOM- shut off intensity and pain immediately- and everybody celebrate.  There is such a joy and peace and spirit of celebration and worship following.  I was thanking the Lord for delivering me... and literally Burk.  Corey snaps pictures, Melissa texts the friends, my mom is taking iphone pics and sending them to family and my mom even cut the cord.  (Corey and I don't do medical things.)  Burk tries out his lungs:

Burk Cruse Granderson was born weighing in at 7 lbs. 15oz.  He was a long dude 22.5 inches!  I've known all along that he was extremely strong.  He kicked harder than anyone in utero.  He immediately nursed, and well at that!

We are thanking God for this sweet blessing and for a perfect labor and delivery without complications and with a healthy mom and baby.  God is so good.
